What Is Tallow Skincare? Everything You Need to Know About Natural Farm-to-Skin Skincare

If you’ve been searching for tallow skincare, chances are you’ve noticed it appearing everywhere. Once considered an old-fashioned ingredient, beef tallow is making a remarkable comeback as more people look for natural skincare products made with simple, recognisable ingredients.

But what exactly is tallow skincare? Why are so many people turning to it? And what makes it different from conventional skincare products?

At Ardross Farm in Fife, Scotland, we’ve spent years researching and developing our own Ardross Farmhouse Tallow Skincare range. Using tallow rendered from our own grass-fed cattle, we work alongside an experienced natural skincare maker to create products that are fully traceable, nourishing and deeply connected to our family farm.

For us, tallow skincare isn’t a trend. It’s part of a much bigger story about farming, sustainability, animal welfare and making full use of the incredible animals we have the privilege of raising.

What Is Tallow?

Tallow is a traditional fat rendered from cattle. Rendering simply means gently heating the fat to remove impurities, leaving behind a beautifully pure, nourishing fat.

For centuries, people used tallow in cooking, candle making, soap making and skincare. Long before supermarkets stocked shelves with creams containing ingredients few people can pronounce, households regularly used animal fats to care for their skin.

At Ardross Farm, our tallow comes exclusively from our own herd of grass-fed cattle. Every animal is born and raised on our farm, allowing us complete traceability from field to finished product.

Unlike many tallow skincare brands, we don’t buy in bulk tallow from unknown sources. We know exactly where every batch comes from because we have raised every animal ourselves.

Why Is Tallow Skincare Becoming Popular Again?

Modern consumers are increasingly questioning what goes into the products they use every day.

Many people are looking for:

  • Natural skincare with simple ingredients.
  • Products with full traceability.
  • Sustainable and environmentally responsible choices.
  • Traditional skincare made using time-honoured methods.
  • Skincare free from unnecessary additives.

As people become more interested in ingredient transparency, tallow skincare has been rediscovered.

While tallow may seem unusual today, it was once completely normal. In many ways, tallow skincare represents a return to traditional wisdom — using nourishing ingredients that generations before us relied upon.

For us as farmers, it also offers an opportunity to reconnect people with where products come from and the incredible versatility of the animals we raise.

The History of Tallow in Skincare

Using tallow for skincare is far from a new idea.

For thousands of years, civilisations around the world have used rendered animal fats to protect and nourish the skin.

Historically, tallow was widely used in soaps, balms and ointments because it was readily available, effective and naturally moisturising.

Before industrialisation, people generally made use of every part of the animal. Nothing was wasted. Fat was carefully rendered and transformed into useful products for the home.

This traditional, nose-to-tail approach is something we strongly believe in at Ardross Farm.

While modern skincare often relies on highly processed ingredients sourced from all over the world, tallow skincare reminds us that effective skincare doesn’t have to be complicated.

Why We Started Making Tallow Skincare

Our journey into tallow skincare began with a simple question:

How can we make better use of every animal we raise?

Our family’s goal has always been to sell our animals nose to tail, directly to the end consumer.

We sell the meat through our farm shop. We roast bones to make broth. Some organs are used in dog food. Fat is rendered into dripping. Yet despite these efforts, we still had valuable fat left over.

As farmers, we believe we have a responsibility to the animals we raise. If we are going to ask animals to give their lives, we believe we should use every possible part with care and respect.

After years of research, we discovered that tallow wasn’t simply useful — it had been prized for centuries as a skincare ingredient.

At the same time, our family has experienced first-hand the challenges of problematic skin. My sister has suffered with severe eczema for many years and has found tallow-based products incredibly beneficial.

That personal experience gave us even more motivation to explore the potential of tallow skincare.

Creating our skincare range has allowed us to reduce waste, add value to our farm produce and take another step towards building a more sustainable farming business.

Our Cattle: The Foundation of Our Tallow Skincare

Exceptional skincare starts with exceptional farming.

Our tallow comes from our own herd of Stabiliser cattle, a breed chosen because they thrive in our farming system.

Stabilisers may not have the most glamorous name, but they are remarkable animals. They are hardy, calve easily and produce healthy calves that are quickly up on their feet and suckling, receiving the vital colostrum that provides the building blocks for life.

Our herd is one of the highest health herds in the country, and we are proud to be certified by Pasture for Life.

Pasture for Life certification means our cattle eat only grass and forage throughout their lives. During the winter months, we supplement their diet with silage — simply fermented grass preserved from the summer.

Across our farm, we grow diverse pastures containing hundreds of plant species, creating rich, nourishing grazing for our animals while supporting biodiversity and soil health.

Because we raise every animal ourselves, we can guarantee that the tallow in our skincare is 100% grass-fed and fully traceable.

How We Produce Our Tallow Skincare

All of the tallow used in our skincare comes from our own grass-fed cattle, born and raised here at Ardross Farm.

On the farm, we carefully render the beef fat ourselves using a combination of traditional wet and dry rendering methods in our commercial kitchen. Rendering is a slow process, requiring patience and attention to detail to create beautifully pure tallow.

Once rendered, the tallow is then passed to Clare, an experienced skincare maker with years of expertise in natural skincare formulation.

Working alongside Clare allows us to combine the very best of both worlds: complete traceability and exceptional farming standards from our side, alongside specialist skincare knowledge and craftsmanship from hers.

Together, we have developed the Ardross Farmhouse Tallow Skincare range, blending traditional ingredients with modern expertise to create products that are both effective and beautifully made.

From the grass our cattle eat, to the carefully rendered tallow, to the finished soap and whipped tallow butter, every product is rooted in our farm and created with care.

It truly is farm-to-skin skincare.

Meet Clare: The Expertise Behind Our Skincare

While every batch of tallow begins its journey here at Ardross Farm, we don’t create the finished skincare products alone.

After carefully rendering the tallow on the farm, we work with Clare, an experienced skincare maker with years of expertise in natural skincare formulation.

From the very beginning, it was important to us that our skincare products not only reflected our farming values, but were also created to the highest possible standard. By partnering with Clare, we are able to combine complete traceability and exceptional farming standards with specialist skincare knowledge and craftsmanship.

We believe this partnership gives our customers the very best of both worlds: truly farm-to-skin ingredients from our own grass-fed cattle, combined with expert formulation and careful craftsmanship.

Sustainability at the Heart of Everything We Do

Years ago, Mum and Dad made the difficult decision to move away from supplying supermarkets. The pressure to continually become bigger, faster and more efficient simply wasn’t sustainable for our family, our farm or the animals living here.

Instead, we chose a different path.

Through our farm shop and now our skincare range, we can connect directly with customers, tell the story behind our food and products, and receive fair value for what we produce.

We believe farmers have a responsibility to produce nourishing food while caring for the soil, animals and wider environment.

Our tallow skincare helps us honour that philosophy by ensuring more of each animal is used with care and respect.

Our packaging is plastic-free wherever possible, and if plastic is used, it is often repurposed from deliveries we have received ourselves.
