We’ve just taken delivery of our second batch of Rob’s Lager, and as part of the brewing process we’ve been left with a little extra malt. Rather than tuck it away, we thought it would be lovely to offer it to any home brewers who might like to brew with something truly local and traceable.
This isn’t just any malt.
It’s the very same malt that goes into our own lager.
The barley was grown here on our family farm in the East Neuk of Fife, in the same fields we’ve been farming for generations. We sowed it, tended it, harvested it, and watched it grow into a crop we were genuinely proud of.
For us, that’s what makes this malt special.
It isn’t anonymous. It isn’t shipped in from miles away.
It’s single-origin, fully traceable and rooted in this place.
Once harvested, the barley was taken to Crafty Maltsters in Auchtermuchty, where it was expertly malted for us. Keeping that process local was really important. It means the entire journey — from seed to sack — happened within Fife.
The result is a beautifully clean, high-quality malt with great flavour potential and consistency. It’s exactly what we wanted for Rob’s Lager, and we’re excited to see what other brewers might create with it.
Rob’s Lager was our first farm-to-bottle beer, made using barley grown on our own land and brewed with St Andrews Brewing Company. It’s named after Rob (Dad), in homage to his love of a cold lager after harvest.
This malt is the foundation of that lager — and now, it’s available for you to brew with too.
January always feels like a quieter, more reflective time on the farm. The fields are resting, the shop is calmer, and it’s the perfect season for indoor projects and slow, satisfying hobbies.
If you’re a home brewer — or thinking of becoming one — this is a lovely chance to brew with an ingredient that has a real story behind it. Whether it’s a crisp lager, a pale ale, or something more experimental, you’ll be working with malt that has provenance, care and craftsmanship woven into it.
We’re selling our farm-grown malt in whatever quantity you need at £2 per kg.
